Terms and conditions of employment
The School Caretakers’ Cleaners’ and Canteen Staff Collective Agreement provides the terms and conditions of employment for school caretakers, cleaners and canteen staff in state and state-integrated schools in New Zealand. If new employees are not members of the union and do not wish to join the union, then they will need to be given an individual employment agreement (IEA) which contains the terms and conditions of their employment.
Local variations in the employment agreement
The collective agreement contains a provision to allow a variation to be made which incorporates allowances and other elements (overtime, callback) into the total remuneration package. See Guidelines for local variations for more information and a template.

These workers have some provisions which provide protection under the Employment Relations Act 2000. We recommend first reading about Part 6A of the Employment Relations Act 2000 (joint guidance from NZSTA, E Tū and the Ministry of Education) and then contacting NZSTA’s Employment Advisory and Support Centre on 0800 782 435 (option2) for further advice before beginning the process for contracting out or in of these employees.
