Who are we?

  • NZSTA provides national support to assist communities in the provision of outstanding governance for schools, through effective employment advice, HR and organisational development practices as well as a variety of professional development opportunities for boards of trustees.
  • We work closely with government stakeholders, educationalists and sector representatives to ensure that all children are supported to attain their highest educational achievement.

Administration Assistant

The primary purpose of the Administrative Assistant position is to provide reception, event management, administrative and facilities management services.

A typical day for the Administration Assistant, includes:

  • Reception and general administration duties
  • Facilities management
  • Booking and managing all travel required for staff
  • Receipting customer payments
  • Database maintenance
  • Internal events organisation.

Employment Adviser

  • Work as part of the employment team based in our national office supporting the Principal Employment Adviser and Senior Employment Adviser
  • Support the provision of employment advice and support to our Advisory & Support Centre and regional advisers on employment relations matters
  • Review and update our employment resources to maintain accuracy and currency.

An intermediate role for a smart professional looking to add depth and variety to their employment relations portfolio of skills.

A typical day for the Employment Adviser includes:

  • Assisting in the provision of advice to our Advisory & Support Centre and regional advisers through researching complex employment matters, including the interpretation and application of legislation and terms of the collective agreements
  • Assisting the Principal Employment Adviser and the Senior Employment Adviser in the ongoing development of NZSTAs best practice employment relations guides and resources.
  • Supporting the Senior Employment Adviser in the ongoing development and review of NZSTA employment resources
  • Supporting the Principal Employment Adviser and Senior Employment Adviser at education sector reviews, working parties and collective bargaining sessions
  • As directed by the Principal Employment Adviser, networking and collaborating with state sector advisers, and union representatives on key projects in the education sector.

  • You have 3 years minimum experience working with employee relations, employment law and HR practice
  • You enjoy learning, researching and providing sound advice
  • You are wishing to build on your existing skills and experience in the state sector and more particularly employment relations in education

Senior Employment Adviser

  • Engage with key education sector agencies and representatives on employment matters including interpretation of the education sector collective agreements; support with industrial bargaining process; support and representation at Crown working parties; where appropriate the joint development of best practice employment resources with other education sector agencies
  • Provide employment advice and support to our Advisory & Support Centre and regional employment advisers on employment matters
  • Develop and update our employment resources to maintain accuracy and currency.

A typical day for the Senior Employment Adviser, includes:

  • Supporting our Advisory & Support Centre and regional advisers to resolve complex employment matters, including the interpretation and application of legislation and terms of the collective agreements 
  • Coaching, mentoring and influencing our advisers, to deliver the NZSTA best practice employment relations service
  • Leading the ongoing development and review of the NZSTA employment resources
  • Representing NZSTA at education sector reviews, working parties and collective bargaining sessions
  • Networking and collaborating with senior state sector advisers, union representatives on key projects in the education sector. 

Does this sound like you…?

  • You have 5 years minimum experience working with employee relations and employment law, HR practice and organisational development.  You will have experience as counsel in employment cases at mediation and the Employment Relations Authority
  • You get a kick out of seeing the results from your coaching and mentoring of advisers
  • You’re a confident practitioner who can provide clear and unequivocal employment relations advice
  • Your strengths include working collegially and collaboratively with the NZSTA advisers and senior leadership team
  • You love meeting people from all walks of life, building relationships and exceeding expectations
  • You are resilient, enjoy a bit of travel, working flexibly and you enjoy working in a dynamic environment.
